1937- . English footballer, younger brother
of Jack Charlton, who scored a record 49
goals in 106 appearances. He spent most of
his playing career with Manchester United. He
was an elegant midfield player renowned for
his sportsmanlike attitude and the fierce
long-range shots in which he specialized. On
retiring he had an unsuccessful spell as
manager of Preston North End. He later became
a director of Manchester United. CAREER
